9:00 pm
no one can live without it's in one of the largest blood banks in the world. blood of nigeria. on our team. here's mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that the americans call a dollar. i'm sorry i'm just a guy who cares an awful lot about my country you sir are a fool you know what that is my terror cells but i don't want to listen to feature stories on the on the liberal approach. to really sort of the.
9:01 pm
tough guys i am abby martin so just came out last week's media coverage of the un general assembly was a teensy bit skewed let me break it down for you netanyahu speech was welcomed as a full on media blitz every network made sure to cover the the man between them everything he had to say and what kind of coverage they don't manage our get well he pretty much got a laugh in the face because before he even spoke the new york post published this that the piece of. his speech was even cut off by c.n.n. interestingly right before he said that countries and religion should have no problems with each other sounds a little familiar i want to separate trip to new york the video also failed to report that i cannot actually met with jewish religious leaders to exchange well wishes for all religions people and cultures so is it a coincidence that they left us out partly because you see what the mainstream media was trying to do is isolate his message before even hearing it what they
9:02 pm
wanted to do was a fiery anti semitic speech from a nutty nuclear bomb clad leader and his message of peace didn't fit in with their preordained narrative well they catered it to fit their preconceived notion. when they should have been challenging them and that's why i'm breaking the set. i . said we're coming up on the first round of debates on wednesday but by the way corporate media has been acting you'd think the polls are already closing i mean seriously apparently obama has already won. the numbers the battleground states according to almost all of the reputable national polls there show that obama is ahead in most of these key battleground states and the national polls this week giving president obama a slight lead over governor romney according to the latest fox news poll forty
9:03 pm
eight percent of likely voters likely voters say that they would vote for the president over governor romney what's interesting here savannah though is it means he now only needs a couple of states a couple of the big states big three that i talk about all the time i'll sort of virginia just a couple of ways and he gets over the finish and i think the. debates are even a draw i think the president will win just a few states for obama to cross that finish line a seriously it's october first so are these polls the biggest news story right now you know what i think is more interesting than a pre-determined election outcome the fact that secrecy about surveillance has increased ten fold under obama than under bush it's got to the chase here since two thousand and nine electoral votes are valence of americans specifically penn registers and trap and trace devices on the phones went from twenty four thousand to nearly thirty eight thousand cases let me make this more visual for you before
9:04 pm
you request by the a.c.l.u. revealed that more people were subject to some form of surveillance in the past two years and the entire previous decade over the past couple of years there's also been a rise in tracking and surveillance of e-mail network communications and the type of online surveillance that was rarely used in the past but we've learned from the d.o.j. that it's actually increased by a whopping three hundred and sixty one percent between the last two years. but they're obviously not the kind of numbers that make the news because there's so much more important things demanding our attention like in car dash ins assets while obama could be nearing the end of his presidency with as much criticism as he has given bush for political secrecy the obama white house hasn't been any different in fact it's been worse kind of contradictory to see what he had to say in the first few weeks as president and said quote the fruit of integration act which encourages accountability through transparency is the most prominent expression of are found national commitment to ensuring an open government all
9:05 pm
agencies should use modern technology to inform citizens about what is known and done by their government disclosure should be timely yep that was a goal that the obama administration set for itself but when it came down to disclosing reports related to the growing number of americans being surveilled the d.o.j. as time and time again failed to submit these mandatory reports to congress so a lawsuit was actually filed demanding their release and after they were finally obtained nothing was ever done with the information it was even made public for the fight is a law which gave attorney general the authority to order mass acquisition of electronic data from suspected terrorists without a warrant well we never really got an answer on how many americans have been subject to this type of surveillance and even though we have the reports we still don't know how the government is using these surveillance tools the information
9:06 pm
simply isn't public and you want to know why because the government says it would be a violation of your privacy to tell you that they're spying on you and i thanks perfect sense right you see what obama seems to have forgotten is that transparency is actually crucial for an informed citizenry because without the ability to make informed decisions a true democracy cannot function. earlier this year the southern poverty law center reported a staggering number that you probably have never heard about it's reported that there had been a sixty nine percent increase in the number of hate groups since the year two thousand many of which are geared toward white supremacy you know it's interesting we're constantly told that in order to maintain the thing here any of this country in order to protect ourselves from terrorists abroad we have to keep the troops in
9:07 pm
afghanistan or use drone warfare but as whites the premise is and perhaps one of the biggest threats to our national security and if so what are we doing about it to talk more about this and more i'm joined by mark potok senior fellow at the southern poverty law center and editor in chief of the journal and teligent report mark thank you so much for joining us today so my pleasure so you know in the last three years particularly these groups have really as equated why do you think that this upsurge what is attributed to this upsurge. well it's very clearly been associated really with the rise to power as barack obama the country's first black president of course and let that rise to power really represents which is an ongoing racial demographic change in this country the census bureau has predicted that whites will lose their majority about the year twenty fifty so faced with a black president then that reality some in this country are reacting with real
9:08 pm
fear or a combination of fear resentment hatred and sometimes just white hot anger and i should mention it's not only will be classified as take groups that are growing growing but in fact much more explosive fleet so-called patriot groups the groups we used to think of as militias back in the one nine hundred ninety s. which rose from a mere hundred forty nine in two thousand and eight before obama appeared on the scene and as of last year it breached twelve hundred seventy four groups that is a seven hundred fifty five percent increase in just three years well let's talk about things. patriot groups i do have some questions about it i mean we are change with keepers i mean i know a lot of people in these groups and what what constitutes someone as to put on your radar putting them on as you know why is patriotism bad i mean what are these people doing that constitutes you guys to be watching them well it's not remotely suggestion that patriotism quote unquote is bad that is simply what these groups as
9:09 pm
a general matter a call themselves a good example is oath keepers the group you just mentioned oath keepers does portray itself as kind of mainstream group which acts asks its members law enforcement officials retired and present military to take the oath of office the oath to defend the constitution against foreign enemies and domestic ottoman is foreign foreign and domestic that's totally reasonable and certainly no one here has any objection to that whatsoever what oath keepers is really about though is the core militia ideology the conspiracy theory that the government is engaged in a secret plot to place this country entre martial law ferry likely with the help of foreign troops to strip americans guns away from them in their entirety to throw those who resist into concentration camps that are either now built or being built
9:10 pm
by fema the federal emergency management agency and ultimately to force the united states into a so-called new world mark i mean a lot of people do it here to that not just the so-called patriot groups but i mean even top level government officials have said that there is the continuity of government in place also the n.d.a. i mean when you look at things like this can you really blame people for maybe thinking that is in the works or being paranoid about those things well yes i can blame people because it's simply false and that if one pays any attention to the real world one would know those things are false the national defense authorization act. to which you refer include some kind of planning for a possible state of emergency in the future it is not repeat not a blueprint for a new world takeover new world order takeover of the united states or nor does it reflect a secret plans to build concentration camps into which we planned ok well let's talk really quickly about was undoubtedly share i think
9:11 pm
a lot of people like in that we are changing women a lot of those people i've met most of them are just concerned with kind of the police state no one can really deny that this country has a very militarized police force and they are concerned about kind of the government overstepping of civil liberties i mean that's undeniable as well where change thrives itself on nonviolent resistance i i don't know anyone that's affiliated with that organization that could possibly be deemed as what you're characterizing do you think that it's a dangerous role to nice and not miss a violent group that's your comment not mine we've never made that suggestion here but marc when you're not imposing these groups when you're juxtaposing these groups or with you characterize them as hate groups right i understand that say that we're calling but we aren't but when you characterize them as groups that one should be watching out for and kind of put them under the blanket next to hate groups i mean another list of course but i mean what do you think is doesn't it damage. do i
9:12 pm
think it does any damage and yet it's a part of an effort to inform the public you may not recall it but we have a very very well it's a so-called once again patriot movement a militia movement back in the one nine hundred ninety s. and it produced in the enormous level of criminal actions and i don't mean to suggest nor have i ever suggested that all the groups or all members of these groups are criminals are interested in any criminality at all what i would suggest is that they are essentially underwritten by a series of conspiracy theories which are not true which. if the effect of crossing great fear among people who need not fear there is some truth to the idea the police have been militarized in a way that they were not way back in the one nine hundred eighty certainly when you look at swat teams today they look a whole lot more military then they did twenty or thirty years ago those concerns about that concerns of civil liberties and so on are perfectly valid and i
9:13 pm
don't suggest any criticism of people who have those concerns at all sure i think you know he's concerned your government and ideology which posits the government involved in all kinds of elaborate conspiracy theories which end with millions of americans you can see in concentration camps i think it's time for i and i think that might be a leap marred by i'll give you that but i also wanted to say you know a lot of people say that the government is fair mongar in this country and to being scared of muslim terrorists but i want to actually segues and i want to tell that to the sikhs in the sikh temple that's what i really wanted to last my i actually did want to ask you about the sikh temple shooting michael page and it was a faction of one of the most violent raises gangs in the country were you guys following this gang before the attack and if so i mean with so many groups that exist in the escalation of all these white supremacist groups how do we monitor them and prevent attacks like this from happening well the short answer is yes we
9:14 pm
are tracking michael wade page wade michael page pardon me for twelve years we've been following him since about two thousand when he began to play in white power rock and roll bands around the country bands with names like and apathy blue-eyed devils definite hate that kind of thing he wasn't a member really of the gang he was a member of the nate made sure skinhead race a skinhead organization called hammer skin nation as a part of the regional organization northern hammer skins you know yes we are a phone. him as we follow thousands and thousands of other people involved in the heart for interests of this movement but i don't criticize force meant for not somehow preventing this attack but there really was nothing to suggest that page was about to start murdering people and the reality is that there are very large numbers of people in this country who have similar ideology simply if systems to
9:15 pm
that of michael late great michael page pardon me it's so sad to say although some of us knew a fair amount about a there really was nothing to be done that is apparent to me in any case that could have saved those people. thank you so much for coming on i do disagree with the characterization of these the more peaceful groups just for having questions about the government are what you call the website advocate extreme anti government doctrines or conspiracy theorizing that is groundless but on the other hand you know definitely the groups that michael wade page were involved in something i look out for thank you so much for coming on and breaking it down mark potok. if you like what you see so far go to our youtube page at youtube dot com breaking the third and fourth scribe like our facebook page facebook dot com for breaking the set follow me on twitter at abby martin and happy birthday to occupy d.c. we should return tomorrow to see where that movement that at first here and we'll

already been six whistleblowers chargin to be espionage act since obama first took office and become clear that this administration is engaging in a full on war against the truth yesterday had the opportunity to attend truth on trial form of supporters for bradley manning featuring talks from whistleblowers thomas drake justin radek and even manning's colleague david house and hear me talk about this event and break it all down r.t. web producer andrew blake is going on man you know a little tired from yesterday still is a really intense day it was really intense was also awesome to hear from people who had the media doesn't really report on it all if the media if the government keeps up this whole trend you're never going to hear these people because they are kind of telling us that no there really is a war it was a blow as it were an example and i think one of most outrageous things was that the espionage act was designed for spies during world war one nine hundred seventy arc a piece of legislation and to actually charge people with this bizarre law that
9:19 pm
doesn't really apply to whistleblowers and truth tellers is that was really interesting that's one thing that you kept hearing over and over again last night whether it's jesselyn or a thomas trying to blew the whistle on an essay or david house was that these people weren't committing like necessarily crimes per se they were being persecuted for telling the truth he said that was a crime and even though it was actually saying you know when bradley manning when he joined the army he was twenty one maybe you know eventually became a private first class he joined the army to defend the constitution and now the exactly what he was trying to do. and it's now his it's eight hundred sixty days today that he's been in prison for was looking to accused of telling the truth and david house actually said you know truth is a very scarce resource nowadays and i think everyone that was at yesterday's event could attest to that because here were people who have been prosecuted and persecuted for trying to just take information and share it with the rest here and
9:20 pm
the legal maximum to hold someone without charges is one hundred twenty days and i think it's really important to realize. how long bradley manning's really been in his cell with no charges and i really also like what david house said about it's up to us we need to show the government that if someone is sitting there without due process and as someone a whistleblower and truth teller we need to show the government that we want to demand due process for these people we can't just sit back and let this happen to people and it's not just like he's sitting around in like a low security prison playing x. box you know bradley has. by the time his trial finishes post his trial to be february by the time it wraps up it'll be around a thousand days if it goes as planned since he was first put into solitary stripped of all those clothes made you know were like cardboard sleep on like metal this is it's torture this un called it was sure yeah it is torture and you know it's nothing is changing you know right now there's another case it's nowhere near as severe but jeremy hammond who was involved in the group anonymous offshoot he's
9:21 pm
been in prison for like two hundred thirty days now and hasn't gone to trial yet he's been held in new york city for his role in the stratford leak last year and he's you know things are a little different he's being held in new york city. yeah it's not quantico it's not going to. but it's people are getting in trouble for trying to nonviolent crimes i really wanted to mention one thing that just said who was pushing the attorney for drake she represented dragons she blew the whistle on a violations of department of justice she was awesome and she was saying one thing that i had no idea about was that since we can because now declared an enemy of the state from the government any media publication technically that publishes the cables that wiki leaks has could also be charge of the espionage act so it's just a whole slew of like it's a never ending if they wanted to go after it they could use these technicalities to really and we know that they already are and one thing that chris hedges actually
9:22 pm
brought up yesterday's event was that he believes that the national defense authorization act of fiscal year two thousand and twelve. those indefinite detention provisions that are in there specifically ten twenty one b. you know the statute that actually says we can hold u.s. citizens without trial forever and ever and ever on the phone one he was saying that he leaves that the government is already using those provisions and they are indefinitely detaining u.s. citizens perhaps even on american soil for crimes that they are going to be charged as not being charged right now we know all the people at guantanamo been sitting there and wasting away we know bradley's been wasting away for eight hundred sixty two days now and chris i just as well i think i don't under the n.d.a. people are already. using it to imprison others and it's a fairly good good chance of this actually the very very unfortunate truth we know that there is this war and whistleblowers we know that the government is continuing to fight in federal court for the power to indefinitely detain americans for anything they want to put them in jail for so it's not really. time right now just
9:23 pm
to clarify the obama to put this emergency stay immediately after it was appealed to katherine for actually put the injunction on she put the injunction on a thursday they said they idea they were going to deal in appealed it a monday morning. like why would they be so aggressively trying to hold this president is it were already using that we have to end there for i don't know how much you talk about. player. so another study was just conducted about the effects of genetically modified foods it was done by a friend's research team for the last seven years has been reevaluating biotech funded government studies about g.m. corn last week the group published their findings in a peer reviewed journal called food and chemical toxicology the study was groundbreaking because it was the first time this specific g.m. maize was tested over two years almost an entire rat's life span instead of just
9:24 pm
the ninety day trial required by regulators what they found is disturbing. to say the least rats developed high levels of cancer and normally giant tumors all over their bodies so this is all further confirms what many other countries already seem to know the safety of g.m.o. crops is questionable by no means should be sold as perfectly safe for human consumption without further testing or to the center for food safety there are already ninety countries that aggressively monitor and restrict or ban g.m. imports so why does there's such a lack of g.m.o. regulation in this country well the biotech giant month and so the largest producer of g.m. seed in the world has a very in sexual relationship with the u.s. government the roots of which stem back for decades bush senior's administration was responsible for deeming g.m.o. crops as substantially equivalent to non gmo crops opening the floodgates for the industry to take over the food supply with little room for opposition. but if
9:25 pm
anyone knows about them santo's toxic past the chemical company they know that the food giants also responsible for such historical gems as d.d.t. p.c. bees and agent orange santa didn't start genetically modifying plants cells and producing seeds until the mid one nine hundred eighty s. and it was a home made possible by someone you may know today mr mitt romney yep the republican presidential hopeful was intimately involved in monsanto's transition into biotechnology when romney was fresh out of harvard he joined a consulting firm bain and company monsanto as bain the largest client quickly romney and john w. handily in one fantasy zero at the time became very tight they were so close in fact that hanley treated romney like a son giving him a million dollars a jump start to cite companies bain and company and bain capital at the time when santo was mired in scandal so romney and bain were focusing on how to shift
9:26 pm
monsanto's business practices away from those that were gaining so much negative publicity by nine hundred eighty one as bay was intimately guiding the company's direction biotech was firmly established as monsanto strategic research focus. conflict of interest much yet little piece of history that isn't boasted about much on the campaign trail so where is romney now and surprisingly he still surrounded himself with his good old friends at monsanto during the presidential primaries romney named an eleven member agricultural advisory committee that was full of months danto connections but all of this attention on romney wouldn't be fair without going over obama's love affair with the scandalous ag giant as well when he was on the campaign trail obama said that he would listen to consumer needs and the label g.m. owes that turns out that he might be one of the most friendly jammo friendly presidents to ever grace the oval office under his administration obama's opened the door for the following g.m. crops. on santa g.m.o. alfalfa monsanto g.m.o.
9:27 pm
sugar beets on santa g.m.o. bt soybean syngenta g.m.o. corn for ethanol pioneer g.m.o. soybeans syngenta g.m.o. bt cotton bayer g.m.o. cotton and g.m.o. papaya strain so how did this happen well one only has to look at who obama has appointed to the very regulatory bodies that are supposed to be responsible for our food safety roger beachy director at the u.s.d.a. is a former director of the month santo danforth center michael taylor is food safety czar is the former vice president monsanto ramona romero a u.s. day counsel was previously on dupont's corporate counsel and the secretary of agriculture tom vilsack was awarded gov of the year by the biotechnology industry organization whose members include monsanto and lastly islams the dickey the u.s.
9:28 pm
agriculture trade representative who pushes g.m. exports and other countries is a former month's sandow lobbyist now you might be wondering why the revolving door between monsanto and the u.s. government is more visible and that's because the white house has refused to answer for your request demanding the disclosure of the relationship with the company once again one sanjo is completely ruthless and expense of our agriculture even worse our health we can't wait around for the government to listen to us so this is a call to action stand for this corporation stop eating their food and let's make sure that they don't meet their bottom line.
